Planning & Managing Sobriety Checkpoints

This class will teach basics of planning and conducting sobriety checkpoints in Tennessee.

Upon completion of the class the attendees will be able to:

  1. Define checkpoint
  2. Identify the Fourth Amendment of the United States
  3. Identify the two case laws that established guidelines for checkpoints in Tennessee
  4. Identify the 13 steps needed to establish a lawful checkpoint in Tennessee
  5. Define General Order 410-1
  6. List at least 5 of 8 things to consider when planning and conducting checkpoints
  7. Identify who approves checkpoints and their locations
  8. Describe notification to the public process
  9. List who supervises checkpoints and their role
  10. Identify personnel needed for checkpoints
  11. Identify equipment needed for checkpoints
  12. Describe manner that checkpoints will be setup
  13. Identify the times of operation required to conduct checkpoints
  14. Define pre-checkpoint briefing and the requirements of
  15. Identify who and how to report data from checkpoints
