TENNESSEE HIGHWAY SAFETY OFFICE JOINS SHELBY COUNTY TO ADDRESS SPIKE IN FATAL CRASHES
SHELBY COUNTY – On Friday, February 18, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office joins the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Memphis Police Department, and other local partners for a press event to address Shelby County’s recent spike in fatal traffic crashes. According to Tennessee’s Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (TITAN), there were 144 fatal crashes in Shelby County in 2019. There were 229 fatal crashes in 2020. Contributing factors include different forms of driver error that could be prevented with safe driving habits. Speakers will offer traffic safety tips and announce upcoming enforcement efforts to prevent future crashes, injuries, and fatalities. The event will also include local resident Ms. Sumi Montgomery. She will share the tragic story of how her father’s life was taken due to a traffic crash while bicycling in 2020. Her father, Rev. Steve Montgomery, was a well-known pastor of Idlewild Presbyterian Church.
